Historic Court Square, Downtown Greenville, South Carolina
This picture is the front of the original court house, now being used as office space. Court square, consisting of Main Street, East Court Street, and West Court Street, is the center of the original town of Pleasantburg, to later be renamed Greenville. The buildings are all historic on the square and are now being used as shops and businesses.
The statue is of Joel Roberts Poinsett (March 2, 1779 - December 12, 1851). A physician, botanist and American statesman, Mr. Poinsett was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, the first U.S. Minister to Mexico (now called Ambassadors), a U.S. Secretary of War and a co-founder of National Institute for the Promotion of Science and the Useful Arts (a predecessor of the Smithsonian Institution).
